Motion Amplification Camera Systems for Vibration Measurement

LPI recently used a motion amplification camera (MAC) system on a custom platform to measure vibrations on the main steam lines at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station. Motion amplification is a video-processing method which can be used to detect and measure small displacements—as little as 0.1 mil at 3 feet—not visible to the human eye. The changes between successive frames can be used to calculate vibration displacements, velocities and frequencies.
 
MAC systems can be used to diagnose a variety of vibration-related issues with equipment or structures, including excessive deflections, inadequate structural support, misalignment or unbalance, excessive motion or flexure. MAC systems have several advantages over accelerometer arrays including ease of setup, less cabling required, flexibility in placement, and full field view of the object without requiring contact. They are ideal for measuring motions of hard-to-reach equipment or structures.
 
The custom platform designed by LPI provided flexibility in positioning, allowing the MAC system to measure vibrations at various locations by remote control. Besides plant equipment, motion amplification camera systems can be used to measuring lower frequency vibrations in other applications such as buildings, bridges and large structures.
