LPI's Ability to Prevent Early-Stage Problems

LPI's reputation for providing reliable fitness-for-service skills to clients is well known. Perhaps less well known, however, but equally a core service it offers to clients, is LPI's ability to enter a product's design cycle early on and provide expert review, assessment, and analysis to verify that a design is on track, and should problems be identified, recommend corrective action. An example of this type of service is LPI's partnering with a client in its effort to ensure American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) code compliance for one of its Automated People Mover (APM) designs. Of the many structural requirements imposed, one was that the vehicle demonstrate via testing the ability to sustain a prescribed minimum compression load at its end fittings without damage, so as to ensure a margin of safety against vehicle damage from car-to-car linkup or accidents. By applying advanced finite element analysis techniques—including real-world nonlinearities such as finite deformation, contact, and elasto-plastic material properties—LPI realistically simulated the response of the vehicle to the test loading up to and beyond its required no-damage load. The analysis results both verified the design's meeting its no-damage-load requirement and quantified its reserve capacity to sustain more significant damage beyond the no-damage load. By partnering with clients in this way, LPI helps prevent small early-stage problems from growing into serious problems later in the design phase, when solutions can become prohibitively expensive.
